Kihon is the basic technique in Japanese martial arts. In Kyokushin, kihon is the foundation of all a karateka’s training.

During kihon, students practice:
— hand strikes;
— kicks;
— blocks;
— stances;
— footwork.

The main goal of kihon is to make technique second nature.

In Kyokushin, kihon is performed through endless repetition. This helps to:
— build strength;
— improve coordination;
— reinforce stances;
— develop correct technique.

Without solid kihon, it is impossible to compete effectively in kumite or perform kata correctly.

Masutatsu Oyama believed that basic technique is the very foundation of a strong karateka.
