Uraken is a snapping backfist strike widely used in Kyokushin. It is characterized by high speed and is often used for surprise attacks and counterattacks.
The defining feature of uraken is its sharpness. The strike is executed quickly and allows you to hit the opponent with virtually no wind-up.
Proper execution requires coordination, relaxation, and precise wrist action. Excessive tension makes the strike slower and less effective.
Uraken can be used as a standalone attack or as part of a combination. It is especially common after hand strikes or when changing distance.
During training, athletes drill uraken in the air, on pads, and in kumite. This helps improve reaction speed and sense of distance.
