Mawashi geri is one of the most well-known kicks in Kyokushin karate. The name translates as «roundhouse kick.» This technique is widely used both in competition and in basic training.
In Kyokushin, mawashi geri can be delivered:
— to the head;
— to the body;
— to the legs.
The most common variation is gedan mawashi geri — a low kick targeting the opponent’s thigh.
Mawashi geri is considered one of the most effective techniques in full contact thanks to:
— high power;
— knockout potential;
— good speed;
— versatility.
Legendary Kyokushin fighters such as Andy Hug, Glaube Feitosa, and Francisco Filho actively used various forms of mawashi geri in their bouts.
For correct execution of the kick it is important to:
— rotate the body;
— maintain balance;
— use the supporting leg correctly;
— control the distance.
