Kumite is a sparring match in karate. In Kyokushin, kumite is fought under full-contact rules, making it one of the toughest styles of karate.

During kumite the following are allowed:
— punches to the body;
— kicks to the head and body;
— low kicks;
— knee strikes.

Punches to the head are prohibited.

Kumite helps to:
— test technique in real combat;
— develop endurance;
— build character;
— learn to perform under pressure.

It is precisely because of its intense kumite that Kyokushin has gained worldwide popularity.

The IKO World Open Karate Tournaments are considered the pinnacle of competitive kumite in Kyokushin.
