Steve Arneil IFK

Steve Arneil is one of the most legendary masters in Kyokushin karate and a man who played an enormous role in spreading full-contact karate beyond Japan. He was born in South Africa and later moved to Great Britain, where he became one of the most celebrated Western students of Masutatsu Oyama.

Arneil began training in Kyokushin during the active development of Oyama’s school and quickly earned a reputation as an incredibly tough and resilient fighter. He entered the history of world karate as the first man after Masutatsu Oyama to successfully complete the hyakunin kumite — a test of 100 consecutive full-contact bouts. Moreover, Arneil completed this challenge over three consecutive days, which remains a unique achievement in the history of Kyokushin.

Steve Arneil actively developed Kyokushin across Europe and founded British Karate Kyokushinkai (BKK) — one of the largest full-contact karate organizations in Britain. Under his leadership, the British Kyokushin school became one of the strongest in Europe.

One of Arneil’s most significant achievements was the creation of IFK — the International Federation of Karate. Following the split that occurred after the death of Masutatsu Oyama, Arneil chose to preserve his own direction of Kyokushin development, grounded in the traditions of full contact and the philosophy of OSU.

Steve Arneil’s major achievements:

  • the first man after Masutatsu Oyama to successfully complete the hyakunin kumite;
  • one of the closest Western students of Masutatsu Oyama;
  • founder of British Karate Kyokushinkai;
  • coach of the first non-Japanese team to win the world karate championship across all styles;
  • founder of the IFK organization.

Under Arneil’s leadership, IFK held international tournaments, world championships, European championships, and instructor seminars. The organization focused not only on competitive results but also on developing discipline, respect, and strength of spirit.

As of 2025, IFK unites more than 100,000 karateka and national organizations in over 50 countries worldwide.

Today, Steve Arneil is regarded as one of the most respected figures in the history of world Kyokushin and a symbol of traditional full-contact karate.
