Biography
Emil Kostov is a legendary Bulgarian Kyokushin fighter, world champion, and one of the most prominent European shihans of IKO Kyokushinkaikan. For many years he was a leading figure in the European full-contact karate school and one of the strongest fighters in the world in his weight category.
Kostov gained worldwide recognition through his victory at the World Championship in Japan, as well as numerous successes at European, Russian, and Balkan championships.
Beyond his competitive career, Emil Kostov made a significant contribution to the development of Kyokushin in Europe and is considered one of the key figures in Bulgarian karate.
Path in Kyokushin
Emil Kostov began training Kyokushin in Bulgaria and quickly became one of the most promising fighters in his country.
In the 1990s, he dominated at the national level and won the Bulgarian championship multiple times. His strong performances at European tournaments gave him the opportunity to compete at the largest international IKO events.
Gradually, he established himself among the strongest European fighters and became one of the leaders of the international Kyokushin school.
World Open Performances
Emil Kostov competed at major IKO tournaments and was among the well-known European fighters of the early 2000s.
His most notable performance came at the 2003 IKO Absolute World Championship, where he received the Fighting Spirit Award — a prize given for exceptional fighting spirit.

This award is traditionally presented to fighters who demonstrated outstanding character, exciting bouts, and a will to win.

World Championships
- 2001 — IKO World Champion in the under-80 kg weight category.
At the 2nd Weight Category World Championship in Osaka, Emil Kostov became the first Bulgarian and second European in history to win that title.
In the final bout he knocked out Japanese fighter Hiroki Kidachi at just 51 seconds into the fight.
European Championships
Emil Kostov is a four-time IKO European Champion.
He won European titles multiple times in both weight and open categories, remaining one of the leading figures in European Kyokushin for many years.
Russian Championships
- 2001 — champion of the Open Russian Championship;
- 2002 — champion of the Open Russian Championship.
Victories at Russian tournaments were considered especially prestigious due to the high level of competition among Russian heavyweights.
