Kancho is the title of the head of an organization in Japanese martial arts. In Kyokushin karate, kancho is responsible for the school’s development, international tournaments, the grading system, and the preservation of traditions.

After the death of Masutatsu Oyama, the title of Kancho in IKO Kyokushinkaikan was passed to Shokei Matsui. Under his leadership, the organization continued to hold absolute world championships and international tournaments.
Kancho has the authority to:
— appoint shihans;
— approve high-dan examinations;
— represent the organization at the world level;
— determine the direction of the school’s development.
Different Kyokushin organizations have their own kancho. For example, in Kyokushin-kan, this title is held by Hatsuo Royama.
For Kyokushin students, kancho is a symbol of the highest authority and a successor to the traditions of Masutatsu Oyama.
