Sensei is the traditional Japanese title for a teacher or coach. In Kyokushin, the sensei teaches students technique, discipline, and the philosophy of karate.

The word «sensei» translates as «one who was born before» — that is, a person with greater experience and knowledge.

A sensei:
— leads training sessions;
— explains technique;
— prepares students for competitions;
— conducts examinations;
— maintains discipline in the dojo.

In Kyokushin, respect for the sensei is considered an essential part of a student’s upbringing.

For many students, the sensei becomes not only a coach but also a mentor who helps develop strength of spirit and character.
