Kata are the signature feature of Kyokushin karate. They are defined technical sequences — a choreographed series of movements and strikes linked by the core principles of combat against an imaginary opponent. Through kata one can get acquainted with the distinctive characteristics of the Kyokushin style.

Through kata one can get acquainted with the distinctive characteristics of the Kyokushin style. In kata one can see not only fighting technique and tactics, but also the fighting spirit that is present in Kyokushin karate.

The word «kata» itself means «form» or «shape.» The literal translation from Japanese is «Form that cuts the earth.»

It should be noted that different organizations make slight modifications to some of the original kata developed by founder Masutatsu Oyama, so they may differ in minor details from one school to another.
