Jan Sokup — World Open silver medalist and one of the greatest European Kyokushin fighters
Biography
Jan Sokup is an outstanding Czech martial artist and one of the most successful European fighters in the history of IKO Kyokushinkaikan. Through his performances at world championships and in Japan, he became one of the defining figures of European Kyokushin in the 2000s.
Sokup began training martial arts as a child. Early in his career he competed successfully in Shotokan karate, achieving strong international results, before fully committing to Kyokushin.
Jan gained worldwide recognition through his strong showings at the World Open and an extraordinarily rare victory at the All Japan Championship in the heavyweight category.
Path in Kyokushin
After a successful junior career in Shotokan, Jan Sokup transitioned to Kyokushin, where he quickly became one of the strongest European heavyweights.
By the early 2000s, he was consistently winning and placing at major European tournaments. His powerful physical conditioning, solid striking technique, and high endurance gradually brought him into the IKO world elite.
He became particularly well known for winning the All Japan Championship in the heavyweight category — an achievement that is extremely rare for European athletes.
World Open Performances
Jan Sokup’s greatest achievement was his silver medal at the 9th IKO Absolute World Championship in 2007.
He became the second European in history to reach the final of the World Open — the most prestigious tournament in world Kyokushin.
In the final, Sokup was defeated by the legendary Ewerton Teixeira, but his performance stood as one of the best results ever achieved by a European fighter in the tournament’s history.
This success firmly established Jan’s status as one of the strongest foreign fighters of his generation.
