In short: a sports rank and a kyu or dan grade belong to different systems. A sports rank relates to an official sports classification and competition results; kyu and dan describe qualifications within Kyokushin. One does not replace the other.
What are kyu and dan?
Kyu are student grades in Kyokushin, following the Japanese system. As a student progresses, the kyu number decreases; dan grades, or black-belt grades, follow. They are awarded under the rules of the relevant organisation after an examination, usually taking technique, kata, physical preparation, time spent training and other requirements into account.
For an overview, see Kyokushin karate belts.
What is a sports rank?
A sports rank is an official athletic qualification awarded under the applicable national sports system and discipline regulations. In Russia there are currently two accredited sports disciplines: Kyokushin and Kyokushinkai. The belt colour is not what matters: the required result, level and status of the competition, placement, age category and properly completed documents are important.
The main difference
| Question | Kyu and dan | Sports rank |
|---|---|---|
| What does it reflect? | A stage of technical development within an organisation. | A verified competition result under the classification rules. |
| How is it obtained? | Through an examination. | By meeting competition requirements and documenting the result. |
| Who sets the requirements? | The organisation and its grading system. | Sports regulations and competition organisers under the applicable rules. |
| Are they equivalent? | No: a high kyu or dan does not automatically confer a sports rank. | No: a sports rank does not replace a kyu or dan examination. |
How sports ranks are usually awarded
- The athlete competes in a recognised discipline and event under the applicable rules.
- They achieve the required result in their category.
- The organiser and sports organisation prepare the supporting documents.
- The result is checked against the requirements in force on the competition date.
Exact standards cannot be treated as permanent: they depend on the country, federation, discipline, age and edition of the rules. Before competing, check the tournament regulations and ask your regional organisation for clarification.
Why the confusion?
Both a belt and a sports rank can be seen as an athlete’s level, but they answer different questions. A belt indicates progress through the dojo’s programme. A sports rank records a competition result through an official process. A strong competitor may not have a formally awarded sports rank, and the reverse is also possible.
What to ask your coach or federation
- Which discipline and age group are specified in the tournament rules?
- Does the event count towards the rank you want?
- What documents are needed after the competition, and who submits them?
- How does the competition calendar fit with your school’s grading schedule?
