Japanese karate has a special system of respectful forms of address. In Kyokushinkai these traditions are considered an important part of a student’s upbringing.

Core forms of address:
— sensei — teacher;
— sempai — senior student;
— shihan — senior master;
— kancho — head of the organization;
— sosai — founder of the school.

During training karatekas also use:
— OSU / OSS — expression of respect and readiness;
— Rei — bow;
— Arigato gozaimasu — gratitude;
— Onegaishimasu — request to train.

Japanese etiquette helps to:
— maintain discipline;
— cultivate respect;
— preserve Kyokushinkai traditions.

This is why proper forms of address are considered an essential part of the philosophy of Japanese karate.
