Sensei is the traditional Japanese title for a teacher or coach. In Kyokushin, the sensei teaches students technique, discipline, and the philosophy of karate.

The word “sensei” translates as “one who was born before” – that is, a person with greater experience and knowledge.

A sensei:
– leads training sessions;
– explains technique;
– prepares students for competitions;
– conducts examinations;
– maintains discipline in the dojo.

In Kyokushin, respect for the sensei is considered an essential part of a student’s upbringing.

For many students, the sensei becomes not only a coach but also a mentor who helps develop strength of spirit and character.
